Are marine engines gear the same in forward and reverse?
I have a volvo 2002 engine in my boat, and wish to change the prop from a three blade fixed to a two blade folding one. the problem is that the folding prop i wish to use is the other rotation to the one i have on there now. I was wondering if this really is a problem as i can run the engine in reverse, but wanted to know are they geared differently for forward and reverse motion?.
Thanks to all that reply, any suggestions or thoughts greatly accepted.
I have just swapped my volvo stern-drive unit from left rotation prop to right and was told by volvo beforehand this would be fine.I changed from a 3blade 17pitch left-hand,to a 4blade 15pitch right-hand.To alter the forward/reverse motion i removed the plate on the unit (2 screws) and swapped the linkage to the other side into the holes that were there for anyone to do just that, volvo told me how to do it and it took 15Min's.My boat (19ft sea-line envoy powered by volvo 250) still does its 28knot top speed that its all-ways done but it accelerates to the plane quicker, there is no more noise or vibration than what was there before the swap and it still runs at 5600rpm flat out,i cant see you having a problem, try it and see,you can always put it back.
