Flying RC Helicopters is a Great Hobby for All
Flying an RC helicopter is a great way to pass some time and have some fun. Like anything, you need to start at a level that suits your hobbyist experience. RC helicopters come in many sizes, shapes and control configurations. Some of the newer ones even have in-flight balance control. Here is a guide to where to start your RC helicopter hobby.
If you are looking at an RC helicopter for a child, the best ones are small enough to fly indoors. These are made of a hard plastic and follow the most basic commands; up, down, left, right, forward and backward. Beginner RC helicopters for kids are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and are very light.
For the most part, this type of toy is electrically operated with batteries. Usually, there are batteries in the remote control and the actual helicopter. You may want to consider getting rechargeable batteries, as they tend to run down quickly. Some types of RC helicopters in this size may even have a fuel-powered motor, but they require a bit of maintenance. Be careful that you do not get in over your head there.
For adult beginners, the models get a little larger and the upkeep is a bit more involved. Some are made of plastic while others are comprised of metal. Typically, the heavier the RC helicopter, the more of a challenge it is to control. The basic commands are there and you may even get a speed control on some models.
On newer models, a gyroscope is placed in the helicopter to help stabilize it in flight. This helps keep the model from falling or dropping out of the air unexpectedly, which can cause damage to the primary parts of the RC helicopter. There is no guarantee of this happening, so you still need to be careful when operating the helicopter.
Now we get to the highest level of RC helicopter flight. The experienced hobbyist or flyer can build his or her own RC helicopter from the ground up. Choose the body style, material, controls desired and then add the rotors, motor and tail pieces that you want. This is only for the advanced RC flyer and makes for a full flying experience.
The advanced models will have all the basic controls and may have an option for rolling left or right. This is different from turning as it allows the flyer to completely control the flight path of the RC helicopter. You may even have a remote start feature so you can start and stop the motor from the remote control. Fuel is another consideration as it determines the overall speed of the helicopter when in flight.
Prices range anywhere from as little as about $20 for the smaller models to approximately $500 for the most advanced ones, like the custom-built models. It all depends on what you want to do and how you want to fly. Parts can be purchased and installed to increase performance. The quality of the components heavily affects the cost, but is still very affordable.
Shop around a bit and see what is available. Pick the model that fits you, then go and enjoy the thrill of flying RC helicopters.
